Material science: why not paraffin
At the master class at MAKA Art we work only with 100% natural soy wax. Let's look at how it differs from the familiar paraffin and why we don't use other options.
Soy wax
A plant wax used by most niche candle brands. It carries fragrance well, burns slower than paraffin and doesn't produce soot. It sets with a matte, creamy surface that is easy to decorate with glitter and seashells.
Why not paraffin?
Paraffin is a petroleum product: it smokes more, burns faster and holds scent poorly. We deliberately work with plant wax only.
What about coconut and beeswax?
Good materials, but each has its quirks: coconut wax is pricier and fussier to work with, beeswax barely takes fragrance and smells of honey on its own. For a first candle and a reliable result, soy wax is the best fit, so the master class stays focused on it.
Technical nuances: what video tutorials keep quiet about
Many beginners find that their candle doesn't smell or "weeps" (releases drops of oil). At the master class we go through three critical points:
Fragrance load
How much oil to add and at what temperature so it binds with the wax instead of evaporating. Too little, and the candle has no scent. Too much, and the oil "sweats" on the surface. The master shows how to find the balance for your chosen fragrance.
Wick selection
